BadJelly Concept Art

I tend to talk a big game when it comes to ideation, so I should probably show off some stuff about it.

For the upcoming show, Badjelly - I was tasked with designing the witch, herself. the goal was to deviate away from too many traditional witch aesthetics, as they have roots in antisemitism, while also keeping her to be very overtly witch-like

This was the mood board that was made for reference on what the directors were after (this mood board grew as we designed)

We ended up going more along the nature, moss grown direction but my playing around with the expressions and face folds really helped out with the end result and apparently even helped form her personality!

She was a really fun character to design and I really like how the current design looks, but theres a hush hush on that at the moment of course!

For my CN game idea, I needed a good villain character!

Someone that could really put a spanner in the works for EVERYONE - cartoony, grounded, jovial, serious, powerful, intelligent - I needed someone who could take over the world of cartoons! I needed someone that wouldn't alienate folks from other fanbases! I needed someone who could go up against the Powerpuff Girls, the Justice League, Ben10 - heck, even Popeye!

I needed... A flea.

The Moxy Show was Cartoon Network's first original cartoon, dating back to '93 - about a down on his luck dog just trying to get his big break into show business on Cartoon Network. his cohost was Flea - a snarky little parasite that just kind of followed Moxy around, occasionally ruining things for him. Unfortunately that's all we really know about these characters as their show is considered lost media, with only a few bumpers, and one full episode surfacing online.

So I decided to make the side kick to this obscure piece of lost media my villain - but first, he needed a glow up!! (quite literally, too!)

After some basic silhouette studies, I decided to play around with some static-y designs, since that would be the most visually explicit way of showing his role as a threat to cartoons - corruption and loss of signal.

I played around with a parasitic motif, given he was a flea - I wanted to keep the reveal that it was this obscure character, hidden but not completely different.

After a while, I narrowed it down to seemingly 2 looks - A big burly powerhouse type and a more calculated electricity guy.

He can't be too burly body horror, because it's kid friendly, and he can't be too slim and calculated looking, because he needs to go up against the most powerful toons this world has to offer. So in the last image, I tried mixing and matching heads and bodies from older designs with the goal of capturing a nice middle ground of the 2 types.
